Don't Be A Lobster On Your Wedding Day

Cyprus is a really sunny place.  Statistics say it’s sunny here for 340 days of the year.

That makes Cyprus an ideal place for your wedding – but watch out for sunburn.

Here’s our tips for making the most of the sun without getting burned.  And they apply to both of you – so make sure your husband-to-be takes care too.

Weddings and Sunburn Don’t Mix

There’s two main reasons to watch out for the sun in Cyprus:

  • If you get sun burned, it’s unpleasant and uncomfortable
  • You don’t want to look like a lobster in your wedding pictures

Before You Come To Cyprus

We advise you stay away from sun beds before you come to Cyprus for your Wedding.

There are health risks associated with them and they won’t stop the problem of strap marks.

Cyprus Sunshine Is Powerful

The sunshine in Cyprus is much more powerful than anything you’ll get in the UK, so always use a high factor sunscreen.

In the middle of the day, take great care.  You can burn in just a few minutes, especially if you’re fair skinned.

Think About Your Wedding Pictures

The main burn areas that show up on wedding photographs are your:

  • forehead (particularly on the guys)
  • nose
  • chin
  • chest
  • shoulders

With make-up, you can cover most of the burn on the brides, but not the grooms.

Wearing a strappy top or bikini?  Be very careful - it’s virtually impossible to cover up or hide strap marks on shoulders.

You’ll Laugh, But...

This is a real story that's happened twice to grooms (so far...).  They’d been sunbathing, but the umbrella didn’t shade their feet.

The result?  Two hobbling grooms with very burnt feet crammed into socks and shoes on their wedding day.  Ouch!

Tips To Avoid Sunburn

  • Staying out of the harsh sun is the best way to avoid sunburn.
  • The sunrays are most intense and direct between 10 am and 3 pm.  If you need to be in the direct sun at these times, cover yourself with long sleeved breathable clothes and use lots of sunscreen.
  • Don't lie around in the direct sun seeking a tan. If you do, you’re sure to get sunburn. Try to shelter under a beach umbrella or a tree.  Remember the sun is reflected by the sand, so take care on the beach.
Always use a good sunscreen, which offers a minimum sun protection factor (SPF) of 15 and protection from UVA as well as UVB rays.
  • Apply the sunscreen liberally to all those parts of your body that could be exposed to the sun. This includes your face, neck, hands, arms, the upper portion of your feet, your toes, and ears.
  • It’s best to apply sunscreen around 15 minutes before go out in the sun.
  • If you are going to be out for the day, keep re-applying sunscreen. Even waterproof sunscreen won’t hold up all day.
  • Wear a hat - ideally with a wide brim to protect your face.
  • Wear sunglasses that completely block both UVA and UVB rays. You will be doing your eyes a great favour.
  • Be careful of cloudy days. There are times when you might feel that just because the sun isn’t too hot, the chances of getting sunburn are less.  This is a misconception.
